Chapter XVIII : Manang’s Chicken

MC1

Love is seldom sweeter the second time around.. but such doesnt hold true to my romance with manang’s chicken. our love story started 2 years ago, when me and my best girl friend (notice the space between girl and friend) discovered this chicken wonder near our office. i remembered us having to eat there nearly every day of every week when we discovered it at ACI towers in Ortigas Center. i remembered the first smell, bite, and giddy reaction i had with my first ever Manang’s Chicken. Time sure do pass by so fast.

mc2

(L) Coleslaw and Macaroni Salad Side Dishes, (R) Manang’s Chips and Dips (Creamy Cheese, Garlic Mayo, and Spicy Ketchup)

But here i am, once again, within the fortress of Manang’s, waiting to taste the latest addition to their food line up! we started the night with the side dishes (i am a coleslaw person – so perfect lang!). part of our menu was their coleslaw and macaroni salad which i have always found to be simple and satisfying, (i really hate complicated salads as each ingredient contributes to the overall taste. Therefore the many ingredients  present, the less overall satisfying it is for me!). following our appetizer round was the Manang’s potato chips with 4 different dips (including the latest spicy ketchup dip – which i found to be awesome! (i love ketchup, and i love spicy food – – therefore this combination was a palate-gasmic experience).

i found the main entree to be delicious yet was a bit wondering regarding the price. the garlic pork rice was a unique experience for me! a pork slab perfected with garlic bits and accompanied by a very weird yet addicting vinegar. i have heard of reviews toward this meal, but all that shattered when i tasted it myself. i still found the magic of manangs chicken in it, the same magic that captivated my heart and stomach 2 years ago. yet i was a bit hesitant regarding it being a budget meal and it being 100+ pesos.

mc3

In Totality, my love for manangs remains (if not, have strengthened!). the explanation to why i do can be stemmed from the satisfaction i get everytime i eat at Manang’s Chicken. up to this day, i have many friends that loves manang’s chicken because they love how big, how budgeted, and how delicious every food selection is at this store.

Some Manang’s Chicken Facts and Tips:
1. Manang’s Chicken is Owned and Operated by Giabella Foods Corporation.
2. Manang’s Chicken was first offered December of 2012 at a public stall in Mercato Centrale
3. By June 2011, the first Manang’s Chicken store opened in Ortigas Center Pasay (here was where i discovered my love for the manang’s chicken)
4. The President and CEO, Jill Borja is a lawyer by profession, and selling fried chicken in weekend markets was only a hobby at first (INSPIRATION TO!)
5. Manang’s Chicken current stores: 1. Ortigas Center, 2. Katipunan, 3. Taft (Vito Cruz are), 4. SM Mega Mall , 5. Sm North Branch, 6. Glorietta 4 Food Choices, 7. Tomas Morato, 8. BF Homes, 9. Wilcon City Center, Visayas Ave
6. Mix and Match the chicken sauces to match your tastes (so that your food wont be too spicy, or too mild — Personal recommendation)
7. Order the Large Manang’s Chips and Dips and share with your friend, date, or family
8. Manang’s Chicken gets better with repetition! (TRUST ME ON THIS!)

so with that, ill just end with.. Thank you Manang’s Chicken for existing, and being part of my life!

Chapter XVI : Thunderbird Resorts

tbp 1

For me to actually say that a hotel is spectaculary-awesome, it needs to pass three criteria

1. Comfortable Bed, Clean Bathrooms, and Excellent Hotel Service (the Residential Criterion)
2. Excellent Ambiance, Fun Factor through hotel amenities, and  Spectacular food (the Entertainment Criterion)
3. Photo Opportunities that are brag-worthy (the Vanity Criterion)

just three minutes upon entering the vicinity of Thunderbird Resort in Poro Point, San Fernando La Union (on a tricycle no less – how unclassy – joke!), i thought to myself that this will be a different kind of hotel experience for me. i am really picky, and “maarte” with hotels, as i was a kid that grew up abroad and had the opportunity to visit different hotels that makes you want to be filthy rich just to be able to live there forever. the feel of Thunderbird was similar to the Grand Hyatt and Al-Bustan Hotel back in Oman (some of the very classy and top of the line hotels back there) – it was a piece of heaven on earth!

3. Vanity
If you haven’t discovered this already, i am a very vain (sometimes conceited) type of individual. taking pictures of myself takes up about 30% of my day, and having good photos always make me happy. Thunderbird resorts was like a comicbook store to a comicbook addict, a toy store to a kid, and a buffet of deliciousness and wonders for the eye. i have always dreamed of visiting a particular place in greece called Santorini, and Thunderbird has (in a way) made me feel that i was there even just for a day. the architecture and color compliments the sky pallete even if the sun is at its peak – therefore compliments every shot that me and my friend took of me.  i was silently praying that the Digital Influencer Marketing Summit of 2013 (the main reason why i was here) starts late, so that i could abuse my photographer to photograph me in every area, with all the poses that i possess. but due to the fact that arrived a bit late (8:30am) i had to make do with a couple of shots during daylight and go through the event and resume vanity after it. suffice to say, with the number of shots that me and aris had, we have enough photos to last three profile and cover photo changes in facebook!

2. Entertainment
The pool was already something that would scream “quota” on my entertainment needs, but noo, thunderbird resorts have more to offer than a pool worth spending the entire day at. Thunderbird resorts la union has a casino (which is about 2 minutes away from the hotel itself – thunderbird shuttles go back and forth transporting guests to the casino and back to the hotel) and a golf course as well.  Me having no interest whatsoever in trying my luck with cards and chips, or teeing off while watching the spectacular sunset appreciated the fact of the diverse entertainment areas made available to guests. i, however, particularly liked the greenery area wherein you can watch the sunset (hand in hand with someone you love), take sunset photos or enjoy the scenery as night envelops and the hotel lights go on. the food was awesome as well, as we (event participants) were treated to a buffet of pallete orgasmic (pallgasmic!) feast –  it is just what everyone needs to compliment the eye treat (eyegasmic!) that is thunderbird resorts!

1. Residential
the most important of the three reasons for me. no matter the reason of the check-in, we always choose the hotel wherein it is worth spending a day or two at, that offers the chance to escape from the routine, and enjoy something different. (so if my hotel room is just similar to my house in manila, how can i call that an escape?). Right after our Casino appreciation, me and my friends were given the privilege of entering one of thunderbird resorts’ villa (based on the price given by their marketing dudes, one night in this very awesome villa costs about 25k – but can house more or less 8 people comfortably.) come to think about it, this would be a good barkada outing venue for very special occasions. we managed to enter this villa, and tour it, i even tried lying down on the beds to determine how comfortable it is to stay there (wrong choice, i ended up wanting to sleep as soon as i felt the matress!). the villa also has a kitchen and plenty bathrooms, a receiving or common area, and a dining table. this three storied villa also has balconies enabling the guest to marvel at the spectacular view the scenery fronting their villa.

the experience (though brief) was something awesome! i do hope that when burdened by the chaos of manila, i get a chance to retreat to this paradise, and experience everything it has to offer! indeed, Thunderbird Resorts deserves the awards that it has gained because it truly is world class!

Chapter XIV : Touchdown Galera

gal header

Rumor has it, that this was a cheap man’s boracay (to be honest, i can not really tell, as i’ve never been to both.), last year, december to be exact, My bestest girl friend Len invited me to accompany them (Vince, Eunice and Gab) to Galera, without hesitation (cause im easy that way), i said yes!

three reasons why i did say yes!
1. i love the beach
2. never been to galera
3. i was with the most awesomest people ever!

remember when we were kids, and our parents brought us to toy stores, candie shops, comic book stores – – have any of you remembered how you moved, acted, spazzed in anticipation? i was all of that on the day that we were supposed to leave for galera. i was very much giddy, to the point that i acted like a little boy holding his very first lego box! haha

1234

but galera was nothing spectacular in my opinion. there was water, sand, structures, stores, visitors – – just an ordinary beach hyped by rumors and stories. but the beach is still the beach for me, in the end, it was us (me and the party) who made this trip extraordinary!

a destination is just a destination (in my opinion), what makes it memorable are the people who were with you at that time!! and being with these clowns, and nerds were all i needed at that time (aside from the sun, and sand, and super clear waters of galera!)

Vince, Me, Gab, and Len

with Len 🙂

with the gang! galera 2012! gab. myself, eunice, moshen, vince, and len

more beach adventures this year guys!! see you soon!

Chapter VI : Citizen’s Pub – I Partied with the Sun People!

REDUX – To Bring BACK, To Restore.

Last year, i managed to join this guild of photographers, videographers and other art enthusiasts called Helios Project International. it was one of the most stable group that i have been part of for the longest time, and a group showing much promise in terms of future plans and goals. this was the case until we hit a rather unexpected roadblock, hindering the growth and putting everything everyone has worked for to a halt.

Two Months ago, me and other members of the Helios Admin Council decided to “do a phoenix” and have a of rebirth of sorts to this dying group (honestly, there was inactivity for a series of months, and it was rather frustrating.) The Helios Project (now without the International) is here to set roots once again and claim its place as one of the active and top photo guilds in the country (haha).

Last August 18, the group celebrated the actual 4th Anniversary (we called it Helios Project : 4th Anniversary Redux). last year we celebrated the 4th Year (when in fact, it was supposed to be just the 3rd year for us). but past is past, and we have moved on from this incident. the High Council also decided to open the event to the public, inviting non-Helios members and other photo guilds to the party. with this move, we declared that helios will not isolate itself from others, and will not create any more rifts to create gaps between other groups (our “Collective” Passion will live on!).

The venue chosen for this anniversary was this awesome pub called Citizen’s Pub, located in Citigolf – Ortigas. we pretty much occupied half of their roof deck, partying the night away without any program, dramas and other gimmicks. just one night of pure conversations, mingling and togetherness!

Chapter V : Reawakening and the Surge of the Spyder

After a significant amount of down time, i have decided to continue my self proclaimed quest. i have said farewell to my usual companions and would start to fulfill my adventure on my own (maybe this could lead to me meeting more adventurers and possible companions in the future).  this adventurer has awakened from the slumber and is determined to finish the quest!

A request for Adventure was found on one of the boards in the web. an establishment called Spyder set out a call to adventurers for a one day skirmish in the river city of Marikina. This group wants several adventurers to try their new gears and see how they fare in action. but would also want to instill a different philosophy and mantra on how adventurers go about their daily lives (a fit and healthy lifestyle, if you will!)

Team Spyder Surge

The call to adventure was heeded by several experienced and neophyte adventurers. the goal was to go around the city of marikina in bikes, clad in spyder outfits and gear. the kit given by the company consists of a chest piece (Cycling Jersey), a visor (performance eyewear), and a helmet.

The adventure started at dawn of the 4th of august. spyder was there early, and adventurers were slowly assembling in front of the Marikina Bikeways office in marikina. Marikina is known to be the first (and only – for now) city that has bike lanes all throughout their road system. Marikina has been advocating a strong cycling community to minimize traffic congestion and pollution. Spyder also teamed-up with the Firefly Brigade in support of their advocacy of a healthier environment brought about by cycling.

The Event is dubbed “Spyder Surge: Answering the Call to Adventure”. it is a series of mini events hosted by Spyder Philippines to have individuals/bloggers/enthusiasts test their products and gears, and be part of an active lifestyle community. Spyder’s VP for marketing said that surges will feature different sports from time to time, and they plan to conduct it monthly or once every two months.  and that they plan to keep each event small so that they could promote the interaction between participants and hosts.

Group shot at SM Marikina

each adventurer was outfitted with an eyewear , a cycling jersey, and a helmet. the goal of the event was to show how resilient, durable and stylish Spyder products are, but also trying to change mindsets from being couch potatoes to becoming health and exercise junkies. everyone was looking sharp, and we were having a lot of heads turning as the entire spyder surge team passed by.  the cycling went on for an hour and a half before we reached this awesome lunch stop.

Pan De-Amerikana has a very hogwartsy feel (kara santos and i agree on this!). there were giant chess pieces, vines hanging from the ceiling and furniture made of old wood (exudes the nature feel, and has a very earthy tone!). brunch was served (food was excellent!) and mingling occurred (one of spyder’s primary goal), several photo opportunities were also done.

after the lunch, the team went for another 10 min bike ride to where we started. there we bade each other goodbye, exchanged contact infos and had that notion of adventuring together sometime.

—-

Spyder provided the following:

with Kara Santos, and Karyl Moral (wearing my mercury helmet)

Cycling Helmet – the Helmet that i used the is called the Spyder Mercury (a helmet created for the road). it was very light, and had well placed vents to allow the passage of the wind as you speed along the pavement. due to the excessive vents, there are no wind resistance. making it possible to speed up with ease.

Spyder Sequel and Cycling Jersey

Performance Eyewear –  the Eyewear that i got from Spyder is called the Sequel. it is a performance type of eyewear primarily developed for cyclists and runners. my sequel came with another set of lens that can be changed to fit the nature of the activity. the lenses are also polarized. the frame is made of lightweight plastic flexible material, not being an added “pagod” factor during activities.

Dry-Fit Cycling Jersey –  The Jersey that i got was extremely eye catching. it has three rear pockets (which i found out to be extremely useful – i tried putting my ipad there, and it fit! giving me many ideas on its other usage!).  the ride was extremely comfortable because wind was passing through this jersey as well. ill try to use this for jogging and running soon!

at the end of the ride – i learned many things. 1. how fun activities like these can change one’s mindset towards the active living/ 2. how it is always fun to do tiring activities with friends, and view it as a bonding activity / 3. i am now in love with cycling.

Thank you Spyder Philippines!

Chapter IV : Soderno : The Food Adventure at Metro’s South

Mech and Myself decided to try out the latest of the many night markets that is scattered around the metro. Soderno, located along madrigal avenue – Alabang, is the latest (based on the info i gathered) of the many sought after food hubs during fridays and the weekends! charging towards the place with an empty stomach, i was prepared for the food adventure that is before me and my companion.

Both Mech and I, started the night with a burger from Big Bob’s Charcoal Burgers (which according to Anton Diaz of “Our Awesome Planet” is one of Mercato’s favorites). Both of us ordered the Big Bob’s special, which costs 180 pesos, but dont let the price take over your consciousness and deem this burger as expensive. it actually is worth the price. my impression of the burger was a taste combination of some of my favorite burger joints like Burger king, Wendy’s and Hardee’s. although offering a different twist with regard the tandem of the  softness of the bacon and the charred to perfection patty.

Big Bob’s Special Burger @ 180 pesos

After my romance with Big Bob’s Special Burger and a cup of Melon Drink, my small party of two was joined by a fellow Helios Project International photographer and blogger Donna Kiritharan. Alabang was her turf, and having her around would be fun! the three of us then set forth to meet another Helios Beauty, Robelene Rayala A.k.a. Robs, who by the way, was at Soderno the entire time. After the inevitable catching up and exchange of witty and funny anecdotes that is our everyday life, rob and her party decided to part ways with ours, leaving us hungry for more food and exchange of stories about life, love and career (cheesy!)

after another round of walking around the Soderno food vicinity, we procured some much talked about Iced Tea at Brewed Leaf : Homemade Iced Teas.  the difference is very noticeable as compared to the regular iced tea. i would recommend the Brewed Leaf: Honey Citrus Sweet Tea which costs 30 pesos only on a 16oz plastic cup. this is the much needed elixir for a very hot and humid night during yesterday’s food adventure.

Brewed Leaf : Honey Citrus Sweet Tea @ 30 pesos

the Adventure at Soderno was much needed after a very mind tearing and stressful week! and of course to top it off, the experience wouldn’t be complete had it not been for the 3 friends and companions that i was with on this food adventure.

Chapter III : Everything ends Well at Swell

After the intense rain and wind that manila experienced during the past few weeks, I, along with friends decided to visit a bar and cafe i used to go to in subic for a chill weekend. i heard that the sun is expected to shine there until wednesday, and i have been longing to dip myself in lukewarm water and lie in the rough sandy beaches fronting my favorite bar in subic.

we decided to leave for subic early. Me and the Apes were accompanied by Len David, a sexy and attractive deviant who excels in eating and critiquing food, and Lloyd – the lost boy, a wandering adventurer known for his many quests in and out of the country. at approximately 7:30, the six of us set forth on our adventure.

Subic was a 2-3 hour trip from the Victory Liner Cubao Terminal. costing 250 pesos (via SCTEX) per person. the trip wasn’t that bad, every one of us had our own personal agendas for the trip. i wanted the beach! some wanted the food, meet new friends, and see new sights. although our main objective in subic is to visit Swell Bar and Cafe. Swell is a relatively new Bar and Cafe in Subic, focusing more on healthy options and offering a very unique lineup of food and drinks.

Welcome to Swell Bar and Cafe

Swell offers paddle boarding to its patrons (more on this in the next chapters)

The very cozy and relaxed area of Swell Bar and Cafe

our party was greeted by Gianne, the operations manager of Swell Bar and Cafe. she had us relax and order some refreshments from their very refreshing drink selection. being a fan of their giant iced tea, i ordered it and even recommended it to my party. at this point, i just couldn’t resist the thought of standing in the bar and neglecting the opportunity to just jump in the water. and so i did, and it felt really good.

At that very instance, i was laying faced up to the sun. i thought to myself while floating around on the wavey ocean, i deserved this break. i told myself that every problem and issues that i may have at that point has been forgotten, even for a brief moment. because at that time, i just felt that everything is going to be SWELL.
